Why are the bus shelters named and why are all the names female?
The naming started out as a Mother’s Day promotion, where members of the public could call in to a radio show and offer their mum’s name for a shelter tribute. For us, this approach was more fun than numbering them, and was so well-received that we continued the practice. It is consistent with the Bajan tradition of naming houses, fishing boats, etc., and helps to connect the structures culturally to the community.
Since our initial Start of naming the shelters after wonderful mothers, we have since continued this practice by having a Name A Bus Shelter After Your Mom Contest. Please Visit our Facebook Page HERE to view the winners and entrants and for further information.
